We feel guilt when we are unable or unwilling to do something someone else wants us to do, or when we are not doing something we think we SHOULD do for ourselves, going to the gym and exercising and managing finances are great examples of this.
Anytime we hear ourselves thinking or saying the words, “I should” we are most likely contemplating doing something we really don’t want to do.
In this week’s episode of RHONJ, Dina is put into a tough spot. It’s really difficult to make a choice about what to do when either choice could have a negative impact on others. When this happens, guilt often immobilizes us, makes us feel physically and emotionally uncomfortable and prohibits us from knowing what we really want in to do. Watch my After Party discussion with Dina and Terri Cole. Guilt is never in alignment with what we want. Check out Terri’s site this week for a free 5-minute grounding meditation for you.
Your guilt simply lowers your energy and your vibration and makes you less available for everyone in your life, including yourself. Louis Hay links guilt to several health problems in her book, You Can Heal Your Life – “Chronic patterns of guilt, and self-criticism raise the body’s stress levels and weaken the immune system”. — Louise L. Hay
Dr. David Hawkins places guilt close to the bottom on his scale of consciousness outlined in his book, “Power VS. Force – The Hidden Determinants of Human Behavior” (Hawkins, 2002)
Although Hawkins goes into great detail about the various levels of consciousness, he points out two turning points as most crucial:
“On our scale of consciousness, there are two critical points that allow for major advancement. The first is at 200, the initial level of empowerment: Here, the willingness to stop blaming and accept responsibility for one’s own actions, feelings, and beliefs arises – as long as cause and responsibility are projected outside of oneself, one will remain in the powerless mode of victimhood. The second is at the 500 level, which is reached by accepting love and nonjudgmental forgiveness as a lifestyle, exercising unconditional kindness to all persons, things, and events without exception.” (Hawkins 2002, 238).
These two thresholds are primary challenges for many individuals today. Moving beyond them represents a significant barrier which can only be overcome through a significant shift in personality. After moving beyond these realms, progression into increasingly higher states is very natural and less challenging.
As you see below guilt is the 2nd to the lowest on the list.
Briefly, here are the energy levels outlined by David Hawkins:
20: Shame
30: Guilt
50: Apathy
75: Grief
100: Fear
125: Desire
150: Anger
175: Pride
200: Courage
250: Neutrality
310: Willingness
350: Acceptance
400: Reason
500: Love
540: Joy
600: Peace
700-1000: Enlightenment
So, whether we feel stuck, like Dina this week, with others having expectations about what you “should” do, or you find yourself saying that word to yourself, you are shackling your power and taxing your body with those words and that feeling. Below is a short taping routine, which helps your body let go of guilt, so you can go inside and think about what you really want to do or why you feel stuck in procrastination.
Think about it: when someone else says, “Ya know, you should really…,” it’s pretty annoying. So how can it be motivating to be say the same thing to ourselves?
After you release your guilt with this exercise, you can now follow start to think about what you want.
Our after party team member, Terri is helping us tap into our body’s wisdom with a 5 minute guided meditation that you can use when you have a decision to make. The more you listen to what your body is trying to tell you, the more you can make decisions with confidence and grace. No one knows your next right action in any given situation better than you do. This meditation will help you ground yourself, so you can hear what you want.
When you figure out what you want, see if you can, like my friend Patricia Moreno creator of Intensati says, “add some fuel to it by assuming it is already happening.”
If you have been “should’ing” yourself about working out, So ask yourself, what part of working out do you want? I am sure you want the results, so number 1, can you focus on how you would feel after you workout or how you would feel slipping into your skinny jeans?
Saying this phrase a number of times with The Easiest Stress Relief Exercise will help – “I feel energized and sexy having just worked out and wearing my skinny jeans! ”My next question is, are you doing a type of exercise at the gym that you actually enjoy? If you are not, stop, and figure out how you could burn calories in a way that actually pleases you! I cannot and will not do cardio on a treadmill or other stationary equipment, as it makes me feel trapped on an arduous road to nowhere. I would much rather, burn calories outside running, walking or biking. See, when you are having fun, you speed up your metabolism; when you are not happy, you actually produce hormones that slow it down.
Boy, I guess I had a lot to say about guilt!
I just soooo want you to be free from it!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Much love and inspiration!
[box type=”shadow”]Also,
I had an AMAZINGLY FUN AND INSPIRING DAY in my Love and Money Sat Workshop. It was so cool to see peoples’ stress about money and relationships vanish from their faces, as they became more and more excited and energized throughout the day!
I have been touched by the overwhelming response from the group of 16 which were present-
“Lara, wowsers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That was amazing yesterday – major shifts baked in and just realizing today how much shift occurred!”
I was so inspired by this deep, intensive experience, that I have decided to do 2 full day workshops…and I would like to design them just for YOU!
I want to hear from you![/box]
Let me know…
What topics would you like to see covered in a 1-day Saturday workshop?
It would be my honor to help you overcome *anything* that is blocking you from living a life you love.
It could be around love, new jobs/careers, relationships and more money. Anything that is important to you.
